Frequently Asked Questions

What is laser engraving?

Laser engraving is the process of using a laser beam to burn or engrave on many forms of materials such as wood, metal, marble, granite, acrylic, glass and much more.

How do I get my photo and/or text file to you?

You can upload your photo and/or text file before adding your chosen item to the cart by clicking to choose a file or by dragging and dropping them to the area indicated.

If you wish to use a photograph that is not available digitally please email us at info@writteninstone.ie and we will make arrangements to take your order by post and will return your original image with your completed order.

How do I clean my slate and granite engravings?

The best method of cleaning engraved slate and granite is with a dry cloth. If necessary use a damp cloth to remove light stains and residue. Never use soap or detergent to clean engravings as it can stain the surface. If the piece is to be placed outside calcium deposits can build up and discolor the engraving, it’s recommended to lightly wipe the marble or granite periodically.

What type of images are best for laser engraving?

When it comes to quality, the quality of the image greatly determines the quality of the engraving. Most images are acceptable for engraving, some are not. The ones that are not usually have certain characteristics about them such as very faded, very low detail or the subject has a shadow over it. Usually the higher the detail and the better the contrast the better the results. Some images just need a minor adjustment and we provide this service free with each order.

When it comes to image size, the larger the image the better. With that said, its better to not resize the image before either uploading or emailing any image file. If you need help getting your photo/scan to us please don’t hesitate to contact us either by email or phone.
